The chokehold of patriarchy

To follow up my previous post about my letter to black women on their lagging support of women in hip hop, I do see a correlation between that lagging support and the influence of patriachy.

Cultural expectations, media portrayals and institutionalized sexism continue to perpetuate male dominance in many areas of life. We've made advances but the patriachy is still alive and thriving.

When I wrote my song "The Original Sin/Queendom Come" on my debut album, "The Late Bloomer" I wrote it not from a feminist standpoint but as a rebuke of the modern structures that continue to plague society with the hopes that we can stir a path of manifested righteousness for the benefit of all. Together, we can achieve more, right? Men have led for centuries and women continue to feel the weight of their foots on our necks. But now, it's time to adjust these settings because we cannot continue to take it anymore.

I placed this song at the beginning of the album as a rallying manifesto acknowleging the release of this chokehold in my life. And as more women are reclaiming their time in bolder ways, rejecting the societal norms of the patriarchy, we also need to unite and encourage others to declare, We're not going to take it anymore!

Now the question is...Who is with me?
